Trend Spotting: The Layered Look

Posted On: June 08, 2017

Contrary to popular belief, trends don’t come and go. They evolve. We see it every daya t Robb & Stucky. Understanding how trends ebb and flow can help you pass on passing-fancy trends (think fidget spinners) and give a thumbs up to trends with staying power (think Audrey Hepburn and that iconic strand of pearls).

Age of Opulence

Posted On: May 11, 2017

There’s a new design trend in the wind. It’s modern, but not minimalist. It’s rich, but won’t break the bank. It’s super glam, but never gauche. Here at Robb & Stucky, we call it the Age of Opulence.

The Go-Go Greens

Posted On: March 17, 2017

Green is having a moment – and it’s more than fleeting 15 seconds of fame. The color’s patron saint is a 14th century missionary by the name of St. Patrick. And more recently, another authority – Pantone – ordained Greenery as the color of 2017.

Is February in Fort Myers all sunshine and blue skies? That would seem to be the prevailing wisdom, but not so fast! At Robb & Stucky, we’re forecasting ice storms. It’s less about meteorology than what we call designology.

THIS JUST IN: Modern Tropical Trending

Posted On: October 27, 2016

There are all kinds of ways to go coastal. In the world of interior design, that is. Just as our Southwest Florida climate is rife with rich variances and nuances, so too, there are many approaches to coastal design. One of Robb & Stucky’s favorites – trend alert time! – is a new sand, surf and sun-inspired approach we call Modern Tropical.

THE NEW TRADITIONAL VALUES

We’ve all heard it: What goes around, comes around. It’s even true in the world of interior design. As Robb & Stucky’s Creative Director, I have my finger on the pulse of decorating trends. And, while midcentury modern has been the It Look for the last few years, right now traditional styling is ascending.

LAST STAND FOR NIGHTSTANDS

Posted On: June 21, 2016

Beds and nightstands have sort of a Barbie-and-Midge, Mary-and-Rhoda, Beyoncé-and-Solange relationship: one is the super star, the other is the diva’s best friend or little sister. Today, however, we are going to shine the design spotlight singularly on nightstands. In today’s interiors, nightstands do so much more than stand meekly bedside.

Bedding ensembles – from sheets and pillow cases to coverlets, duvets, throws and pillows – are the posh tools of the trade.

WHITE HOT: Pro Tips to Successfully Designing with White

Posted On: March 22, 2016

White – it’s the most misunderstood of colors, except amongst the realm of professional interior designers. Wondering what the pros know about white?

The first big reveal: White it’s not a single color. Visit Benjamin Moore’s website or Robb & Stucky’s Fort Myers store and you’ll be smitten with hundreds of shades of white. Cool whites flirt with blue tones. Warm whites cast their lot with ivory. Some whites have a tint of mint, and others blush under close scrutiny.

NATURALLY UNIQUE: Phillips Collection creates furniture from the jungles of Northern Thailand

THINK PINK: Designing with Pink in 2016

Posted On: January 25, 2016

Pink is a polarizing color. You can love it or leave it, but few people are without an opinion on pink. Perhaps that’s why the color gods at Pantone paired Rose Quartz (A.K.A. pink) with Serenity Blue as the color of the year twinset for 2016. I’m a bit more audacious and adventurous. In fact, I’m developing a penchant for pink.

It all started with Robb & Stucky interior designer Ingrid de Villiers. Everyone knows that the Sand Dollar Awards are the Oscars for the building community in Southwest Florida. Late last year, Ingrid was awarded a perfect score for a Naples residence, and the home took away a coveted Sand Dollar – Interior Design of the Year amongst 1.75 to 2 million dollar homes. It’s amazing.

Holidays Alfresco: Drink Tables for the Season

Posted On: November 23, 2015

Floridians wear boots because they’re fashionable, faux fur because we cherish the animal kingdom, and cashmere because it breathes in our oh-so-temperate climate. So too, we are apt to Florida-ize seasonal traditions. We stuff the turkey, spin the dreidel, trim the tree, and celebrate the season, all with a decidedly Florida vibe. First and foremost, we take holiday entertaining outside.

Mark: Here in Florida, we talk about blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living. Does your new collection speak to this trend?

Candice: My approach with the Candice Olson Outdoor Collection for Century was to capture the same beauty, comfort and everyday elegance that I strive to create in my interiors and have it blend seamlessly with the outdoors. In fact, I see this collection as one that looks, feels and functions as beautifully on the deck or patio as it does in the living, family or sunroom. The British Decorating Invasion – New British Colonial Style

Posted On: August 24, 2015

Hail Britannia! Let’s hear it for famous cabinetmakers like Chippendale, Hepplewhite and Sheridan. English decorating trends have colonized all over the world. And for decades, one of the hottest exports has been what’s called British Colonial or British West Indies style.

Yes, it’s a vestige of colonialism, going back to the 19th century. Britannia ruled the world and when they set sail for new lands, it must have been like a corporate relocation plan, because their English furniture traveled with them. But, those stiff-upper-lip English styles morphed and adapted to the new environments. A new style emerged.

Fort Myers Says Hooray for Hollywood Regency

Posted On: May 18, 2015

Southwest Florida is star struck. The object of desire is a decorating phenom called Hollywood Regency, inspired by swanky movies of the 30s and 40s but remastered for today. Gable loved then. Gaga loves it now. Back in the day, Hollywood Regency flourished on movie sets. Today, it’s great for Florida homes, condos and townhomes. Do you love glamour, texture, and bling with a spritz of tradition? You may find yourself luxuriously at home with Hollywood Regency.

Hollywood Regency was a fanciful, wishful response to the Great Depression. Moviegoers escaped to theaters for relief in musicals, melodramas and screwball comedies. Set design and interiors were luxurious and glam. The style continues to inspire us today.

Chairs for Charity (and Great Design)

Posted On: March 23, 2015

The cavemen probably didn’t have furniture and interior design on the brain when they set up the very first human households – hunting and gathering were the first priorities. Followed by chairs. Yes, chairs, the most essential, fundamental piece of furniture. As you look around your new home or cave – with survival assured – the first thing you’re going to need is a place to sit.

So it was then, so it is today! As Robb & Stucky’s Creative Director – with a self-proclaimed chair fetish – I get to shop the world of chairs. And next Wednesday, March 25th, chairs are going to get the spotlight they truly deserve as Robb & Stucky celebrates its 100th anniversary. During “Chairs for Charity,” twelve designer chairs will be up for auction at the Fort Myers store with all proceeds benefiting The American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

Shades of Gray Redeemed

In the past, I think the color gray may have been the victim of bad press. Gray hair is meant to be colored. Gray skies portent rainy days. Gray is the signature color of the much-maligned field mouse.
Then, something happened – is happening.

Dog Days of Summer: Cool Home Decorating Ideas

Can we all agree that Southwest Florida is a little slice of earthly paradise? Holiday Decorating Florida Style

Decking the halls can be a design conundrum, especially for Floridians and most especially for seasonal residents. No, people like us are not Scrooges. We’re just holiday-decorating challenged. For years most of us have collected all manner of ho-ho-holiday tchotchkes: ornaments we’ve had since childhood, grandma’s tree skirt, the suddenly affordable Christmas tree star discovered at Neiman’s post-holiday sale and on it goes. The problem is that for the previous eleven months of the year, most of us have been cultivating an interior design plan with a color palette, specially chosen pieces of furniture and just-right accessories. Are holiday decorating and tasteful interior design at odds with each other?
